ELECTION DAY: In the rival election for Governor of the Independent State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Thomas W. Dorr, candidate of the Suffrage Party wins the election unopposed with 6,359 votes.
NOTE: For six weeks there were two rival governments in Rhode Island.
