The South Carolina Tariff Convention, called by the State legislature condemns the (protective) Tariff (of Abominations) Act of 1832 as “unauthorized by the Constitution of [for] the [u]nited States,” and authorizing,
- the arrest of any federal tariff official seeking to enforce it ten weeks hence;
- the return of any goods confiscated by federal tariff officials to their rightful owners;
- return of all duties paid—plus interest;
- prohibition of any municipal jails in the State to be used for the incarceration of importers accused of violating the TA of 1832; and
- an appropriation of 200,000 Dollars to the State Militia for defense.
