Republican (constitutionalist) President Monroe signs the (Missouri) Compromise of 1820, providing for the admission of the Massachusetts enclave of Maine as a free State, the admission of the federal enclave of Missouri as a slave State, and the prohibition of slavery north of thirty-six degrees, thirty minutes latitude.
