Republican (constitutionalist) President Jefferson signs the Cumberland Road Act of 1806, authorizing construction of the Cumberland Road to extend from Cumberland, Maryland to Wheeling, Virginia. 

       NOTE: Congress is authorized to charter post-Roads, but not to subsidize them.
