Samuel Johnson, perhaps the greatest essayist, lexicographer, biographer, poet in England’s history, utters his famous quip criticizing former Prime Minister Lord John Stuart, Earl of Bute: “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.”

       NOTE: Johnson was a staunch Tory (loyalist) thus opposed to American independence).
