Charles II (a secret Catholic, r. 1649 – 1651, in Scotland; 1660 – 1685, in England and Scotland) issues the Charter of the Province of Maine to his brother James, Duke of York (a Catholic, r. 1685 – 1688), granting him the Dutch enclave of New Netherlands.  James names the colony after himself—New York.
