The Federal court for the eastern district of missouri hands down United states v. Zamarripa: judge Jean C. Hamilton, sentences Antonio Zamarripa to ten years in prison for a first time, non-violent drug felony.  The incarceration forces Zamarripa to give up custody of his baby boy to his mother to raise.

Postscript: Five years later when his mother became terminally ill with lung cancer, Hamilton refused Zamarripa an early release so he could nurse his dying mother and raise his six-year-old son.  During the last few weeks of her life the Bureau of Prisons refused to let Zamarripa to make a telephone call to her.
