The Revolutions of 1989 continue: communist Hungary permanently opens its border with Austria, allowing citizens of the communist Democratic Republic of (East) Germany unfettered access to the socialist Federal Republic of (West) Germany, something that had been previously denied for the four decade existence of both nations.

Postscript: Over the course of the next few weeks 17,000 citizens of the communist Democratic Republic of (East) Germany chose this escape route into the socialist Federal Republic of (West) Germany.
