Vaclav Havel, a playwright and political dissident, of Prague, Czechoslovakia, is sentenced to nine months in prison for helping to organize an anti-communist rally, in Wenceslas Square, commemorating the suicide-protest of Jan Palach two decades previous. A month before, emissaries from the communist Czechoslovakian government, signed the Concluding Document of the Third Follow-up Meeting of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, in Vienna, Austria, pledging to show consideration for human rights.
