McManaway, Jr., United States ambassador to Haiti, calls recent actions by the government in Haiti, “an encouraging step forward”: just the previous month Haiti’s “rubber stamp” legislature unanimously passed a statute requiring that all political parties acknowledge President-for-Life (dictator) Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier as the supreme arbiter of the nation; the Christian Democratic Party was permanently declared illegal, and Duvalier was given the right to suspend political parties without cause.
