Colonel Georges Papadopoulos, military dictator of Greece, launches a coup d’état against Orthodox Archbishop and President Mihail Christodoulou Mouskos (a.k.a. Makarios III), of Cyprus, and installs Nikos Sampson as a puppet dictator.  As the only President of Cyprus (since independence in 1960) the ethnically Greek Moskos was able to maintain a friendly relationship with his island nation’s Turkish Moslem minority.

Postscript: A week later Sampson was forced to flee Cyprus as the Armed Forces of Turkey had invaded Cyprus.
