Game of the Century: John H. McKay, head coach of the University of Southern California Trojans, brings his racially integrated football team into Birmingham’s Legion Field beating the racially segregated host University of alabama Crimson Tide, coached by Paul “Bear” Bryant, by a score of 42-21. All six touchdowns for USC were scored by players of African heritage, including two by Sam “Bam” Cunningham.
Postscript: Bryant’s squad finished the 1970 campaign with a mediocre record of six wins, five losses and one tie. Bryant was able to convince Democratic (socialist/fascist) de facto governor George C. Wallace, Esq., to finally desegregate University of alabama sports. The following year, with an integrated squad, the Crimson Tide achieved an 11-1 record, a number four national ranking in the Associated Press poll and a number two ranking in the United Press International poll.
NOTES:
- Jerry Claiborne, a Crimson Tide assistant coach, would later say, “Sam Cunningham did more to integrate [a]labama in 60 minutes than Martin Luther King did in 20 years.”
- As an attorney (Officer of the Court) Wallace was ineligible to serve in two branches of government at the same time, according to Article I, Section 6 [Clause 2].
