The Gold Crisis begins: Over 100 tons of gold are traded on the London Gold Market— 20 times that which is sold on an ordinary day.  That evening after consultation with Prime Minister Harold Wilson; Roy Jenkins, Chancellor of the Exchequer; and Queen Elizabeth II, of the United Kingdom, orders the suspension of trading on the London Gold Market one week hence.
