The Tet Offensive begins: General Van Tien Dung, commanding the People’s Army of (North) Vietnam, and General Hoang Van Thai, commanding the People’s Liberation Armed Forces of South Vietnam (a.k.a. “Viet Cong”) break the unofficial Chinese New Year truce and attack United states Armed Forces and Army of the Republic of (South) Vietnam positions.
Postscript: Fighting lasted for two months, and resulted in a tactical victory for the U.s. and South Vietnamese; but the strategic victory went to the communist forces, as WE THE PEOPLE rapidly lost confidence in the possibility of achieving an outright victory.
