The Cold War continues: The Soviet Union invades its satellite state of Hungary.  As a consequence of the invasion, Edward T. Wailes, from the United states Legation to Hungary, grants political asylum to Roman Catholic Cardinal Jozsef Mindszenty, an outspoken critic of both fascism and communism.

Postscript: Mindszenty would spend the next fifteen years living in the U.s. embassy.
