The two-week Journey of Reconciliation begins: George Houser, James Peck, Bayard Rustin, and eleven other civil rights volunteers board Greyhound and Trailways buses traveling through the commonwealths of virginia and kentucky; and the confederate states of north carolina and tennessee to test the bus lines’ compliance with the recently supreme court ordered desegregation of interstate transportation.  The decision conflicts with state statutes that require segregated seating on intrastate transportation.
