The battle of Okinawa ends: After 12 weeks of fighting, major general Roy S. Geiger, of the marine corps of the navy of the United states, commanding the tenth army of the U.s., reports to admiral Chester W. Nimitz, of the navy of the U.s., that the island has been secured. Twelve-thousand, two-hundred, fifty Japanese civilians lost their lives.
NOTE: Okinawa was intended to have been used as a base of operations for the planned November invasion of the main Japanese islands.
