The Battle of Berlin begins: Marshal Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov, commander of the Soviet Western Front of the Red Army, launches an all out assault on the capital of Nazi (fascist) Germany.  Joseph Dzhugashvili (a.k.a. Stalin), dictator of the Soviet Union, has ordered Zhukov to take the city before May 1 (“May Day”; a.k.a. International Labor Day).
