A secret military tribunal, composed of seven generals hands down United states v. Dasch, sentencing Ernst Peter Burger, George John Dasch, Herbert Hans Haupt, Henrich Heinck, Edward John Kerling, Herman Otto Neubauer, Robert Quirin and Werner Thiel, to death for attempted sabotage against the United states.  The eight had been brought to U.s. shores by a German U-boat for the purpose of committing sabotage against U.s. war industries and acts of terror against U.s. enemy-citizens.  Although Burger had fully cooperated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and department of justice upon his arrest, and Dasch had voluntarily turned himself into the FBI rather than attack the nation he truly loved.  This was supposed to have been a military trial, but the prosecutor was Francis Biddle, attorney general of the U.s.—a civilian.
