Chancellor Adolf Hitler, of Germany, signs the Enabling Act. The EA suspends the Weimar by giving the chancellor the authority to issue legislation independent of parliament. This effectively makes Hitler dictator. Before the vote the SA storm troopers (the paramilitary wing of the National Socialist German Workers’ (Nazi) Party) intimidated the socialist, centrist and conservative members of parliament into voting for the EA; communist members had already been excluded by the Reichstag Fire Decree.
