President Henry S. Pritchett, of the Carnegie Foundation, makes the final editorial changes on the “Flexner Report.”  The report recommends closing medical schools under the guise of increasing the quality (and cost) of medical care by decreasing its quantity and availability.

Postscripts:

  • At the time the report was issued there were 166 medical schools across the nation.  Three decades later there were only 77.
  • Over the next five decades, despite aging of the population and increasing demand for medical care, the ration of physicians per 100,000 people remained fixed at 146.
  • Only two traditionally black medical schools were allowed to remain open.  Seven decades later only 1.7% of physicians in the nation were of African heritage.
