Washington, of Tuskegee Institute (Alabama) publishes his autobiography Up from Slavery, detailing how born a slave, becoming a freedman at the age of nine, he rose from poverty to establish himself in the “New South”; not by agitating for social change, but through self-improvement and being of service to others.
