The Lattimer Massacre: Sheriff James F. Martin, of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, orders his posse to fire on unarmed and retreating, striking United Mine Workers at the Lattimer anthracite coal mine, reslting in the deaths of 19 German, Lithuanian, Polish and Slovak miners.  The east European workers had originally brought in as break the labor strike of miners of Irish and British heritage.
