Republican (nationalist) President Arthur signs the Apportionment Act of 1882, increasing the size of the House of Representatives from 293 to 325. 

       NOTE: This helps to decrease corruption by reducing the ratio of Representatives to constituents from 190,000 to 152,300:1.
