Republican (nationalist) President Grant signs the Specie Resumption Act, authorizing the release of enough gold (lawful Money) from the United States Treasury to redeem 80,000,000 “dollars” in previously irredeemable Greenbacks (Bills of Credit).

       NOTE: This represented about 21% of the Greenbacks in circulation.
