The first compulsory Union-wide DECORATION (MEMORIAL) DAY: at 183 cemeteries, in 27 northern States, mourners plant united States flags into the graves of Soldiers who lost the lives in the War of Federal Aggression.
NOTE: May 30 was chosen because there were no major battles on that date in any year of the war.
