APRIL FOOLS DAY: In Springfield, Illinois, retired Generals John A. Logan and Richard J. Oglesby, of the Army of the united States, and Benjamin F. Stephenson, M.D. form the first post of the Grand Army of the Republic (the first veterans organization), to lobby the federal government for benefits for Union veterans of the War of Federal Aggression, and to foster a public spirit of loyalty and allegiance to the federal government.
