The Battle of Sayler’s Creek (Virginia): Major General George G. Meade, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Potomac, defeats the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by General Robert E. Lee. Lee loses about one-third of his army during the battle.
