The Battle of Nashville ends: After two days of fighting, Major General George H. Thomas, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Tennessee, defeats the Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by brevet General John Bell Hood.  Thomas takes 4,462 prisoners; most Confederates that were not killed, wounded, or taken prisoner fled into Alabama and Mississippi.

NOTE: This rapid succession of defeats essentially shatters the effectiveness of the Army of Tennessee as a fighting force.
