The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House (Virginia) ends: After two weeks of fighting, General Robert E. Lee, commanding the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of Northern Virginia, and George G. Meade, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Potomac, fight to a draw.
NOTE: Over 4,000 Americans lost their lives.
