Edward Everett Hale anonymously publishes “The Man Without a Country” in the The Atlantic Monthly. The nationalistic Hale wrote this story as a smear on the patriotism of former de facto Democratic (constitutionalist) Representative Clemet Laird Valladingham, of the federal enclave of Ohio, for his quixotic stand against the despotic, war-time, domestic policies of Republican (nationalist) President Abraham Lincoln, of the united States.
