The siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana, ends: Confederate General Franklin Gardner surrenders the last free city on the Mississippi River to Major General Nathaniel P. Banks commanding the compulsory Union Department of the Gulf.  This splits the Confederacy into two parts, and effectively isolates the Confederate government from its “window” to the outside world through the Republic of Texas and French occupied Mexico.
