The Battle of Perryville/Chaplin Hills (Kentucky): Major General Don Carlos Buell, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Ohio, defeats the Army of Tennessee, commanded by Major General Braxton Bragg.  Bragg is forced retreat back to Tennessee, and abandons his recently installed pro-Confederate government in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  Over 1,300 Americans are killed.
