The Battle of Fair Oaks/Seven Pines begins: Major General Joseph E. Johnston, commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, attacks the invading compulsory Union Army of the Potomac, commanded by Major General George B. McClellan.

Postscript: The following day, McClellan retreated from the battlefield, despite having a larger army and losing over a thousand less troops than Johnston.  Over 11,000 Americans lost their lives.
