Commodore David G. Farragut, commanding the compulsory Union West Gulf Blockading Squadron, sails passed Forts Jackson and St. Philip, in the middle of the night.  This leaves New Orleans, Louisiana, the largest city in the Confederacy (a voluntary union) untenable.

Postscript: New Orleans surrendered to the Army of the united States the next day.  The forts surrendered three days later.
