The Battle of Pea Ridge begins: Major General Earl Van Dorn, commanding the Confederate Army of the West, attacks the compulsory Union Army of the Southwest, commanded by Brigadier General Samuel R. Curtis, in an attempt to drive the Army of the united States out of Arkansas.

       Postscript: After three days of fighting, Van Dorn was routed at a cost of 3,300 American casualties.  The defeat solidified the compulsory Union occupation of Missouri.
