The Mountain Meadows Massacre: Major John D. Lee, commanding a band of Jesus Christ Church of Latter-day Saints (a.k.a. “Mormons”) militia and Paiute indi(genous Americ)ans, raids the Baker-Fancher party, which had been emigrating from Arkansas to the Republic of California.  Lee orders the murders of 120 to 140 adults, and the 17 surviving children to be raised as LDS.
