One-hundred, thirty-five slaves, aboard the Creole, successfully revolt against their captors, who were transporting their “cargo” from Hampton Roads, Virginia to New Orleans, Louisiana, where they were to be sold at a considerable profit.
NOTE: Life as a slave became increasingly harsh the further south one went in the Union, which is probably why the slaves revolted.
Postscript: The self-emancipated slaves were freed by the British enclave of the Bahamas the following month.
