ELECTION DAY: Republican (constitutionalist) President pro Tempore John Gaillard, reading the Electoral Ballots before a joint session of the 18th Constitutional Congress, announces no Presidential candidate has a majority of Electoral votes:
- Republican Senator Andrew Jackson, of Tennessee, 99;
- Republican Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, 84;
- Republican Secretary of Treasury William H. Crawford, 41;
- Republican Speaker of the House Henry Clay, 37.
This throws the election into the House of Representatives where each State delegation will have one vote, and choose between the top three candidates. On the first ballot Adams is elected President (Adams, 13; Jackson, 7; Crawford, 4).
