The Battle of Baltimore (Maryland) concludes: After four days of fighting, Major General Samuel Smith, commanding the Militia of Maryland, defeats a joint land-sea task force of the North American Army of the United Kingdom, commanded by Major General Robert Ross; and the North American and Jamaica Stations of the Royal Navy, commanded by Vice Admiral Alexander Inglis Cochrane.

       NOTES:

  • Ross was killed in the battle;
  • The united States’ victory inspired Francis Scott Key to write the “Star Spangled Banner.”
