The twin battles of Jena and Auerstaedt: during the Napoleonic War of 1806, Napoleon I, of the Empire of France, defeats Friedrich Wilhelm III, of Prussia. The defeat causes Friedrich to feel compelled to institute the Poliziestaat (the first modern police state).
