The Federal court for the District of Columbia decides Boumediene v. Bush: judge Richard Leon orders the release of Lakhdar Boumediene and four other Algerian nationals from the Guantanamo Naval Base, Cuba, as there is insufficient evidence to justify holding them after seven-years pre-trial incarceration. Boumediene had maintained all along that he was a volunteer Red Crescent worker.
NOTE: Leon did approve of the continued pre-trial incarceration of a sixth Algerian.
