INDEPENDENCE DAY: Brigadier General George Rogers Clark, commanding the Militia of Virginia, captures Fort Kaskaskia, on the Mississippi River. As a result, the Commonwealth of Virginia lays claim to the British enclave of Quebec (a.k.a. Northwest Territories).
