The Battle of Fort Washington (New York): Lieutenant General William Howe, commanding a force of 8,000 regulars of the Army of Great Britain along with German mercenaries (soldiers of fortune), captures Fort Washington commanded by Colonel Robert Magaw, along with 3,000 regulars of the Continental Army.  This forces General George Washington to retreat to New Jersey.
