The Battle of Harlem Heights (New York): Lieutenant General William Howe, in command of 5,000 regulars of the Army of Great Britain, defeats the Continental Army, commanded by General George Washington. Although the British win the battle, their advance is slowed considerably—and they suffer four times the casualties.
