The Second Continental Congress passes the Post Office Act of 1775, creating the Postmaster General of the United Colonies and appointing Delegate Benjamin Franklin, of the colony of Pennsylvania, as the inaugural office holder.  Franklin’s mission is to undercut the royal General Post Office by 20%.
