During the War of Jenkins’ Ear/a.k.a. King George’s War/a.k.a. the third French and Indian War, Captain Lawrence Washington, commanding 4,000 subject volunteers of the Virginia Militia, assists in the destruction of the Spanish fort at Puerto Bello, Panama.
Postscript: Upon his return home to Virginia, Washington renamed his estate in honor of his commander, Admiral Edward Vernon—Mount Vernon.
