John Symes, Sheriff of New York City, arrests John Peter Zenger, editor of the New-York Weekly Journal, for publishing a series of articles accusing William Crosby, the Royal Governor of New York, of corruption.  Zenger’s bail is set so high that he must remain incarcerated until his trial.
