Denmark Vesey, a slave (conscript) of African heritage, wins 1,500 Dollars, in the Charleston, South Carolina lottery, and is able to purchase his own freedom.
Postscript: As a freedman, Vesey went into business for himself as a carpenter, and later in life co-founded a branch of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston.
