Charles II (a secret Catholic, r. 1649 – 1651, in Scotland; 1660 – 1685, in England and Scotland) issues the Charter of Connecticut to its governor, John Winthrop, Jr. This gives formal acknowledgment to Connecticut as a colony.
Postscript: This charter served as Connecticut’s constitution until 1818.
